Meet the Minds Behind the Workshop

  • Neuroscience: Michael Schmuker
  • Hosts: Eliana Araque / Anna Kanitz
  • Art: Smell Art, Carolina Boettner, Valerian Blos & Gosia Lehmann

Dr. Michael Schmuker

Dr. Schmuker’s research aims at translating algorithms and processes from biology and the brain into solutions for data science and machine learning. He is a pioneer in neuromorphic computing, an emerging technology that takes inspiration from the brain to achieve low-power and low-latency AI. He and his team develop methods for low-latency detection and identification of chemical signals.

Dr. Schmuker is interested in “Odour Space”, that is, the chemical features that capture the properties of odorant molecules. He and his team apply machine learning methods to discover structure-activity and structure-odour relationships in odorant databases.

Valerian Blos & Gosia Lehmann

The artist and designer duo Gosia Lehmann and Valerian Blos work in a research driven approach. Their projects function as a trigger for dialogue and critical reflection regarding human relation to other species and living or non-living matter. Gosia and Valerian’s practice spans across sculptures, installations and performances. They create temporary setups and short lasting moments to intimately engage the audience, through subtle triggers such as smell, vapour or flavour (Humming Stones 2021, Substance of Power 2023) to spaces of confrontation like wrestling rings (Falling Upwards, 2019) or sleeping places (Departure, Arrival, Return, 2019).

Carolina Boettner

Carolina is a Berlin-based interdisciplinary artist from Argentina. Revealing what is implicit in the subject is what motivates her to create pieces that highlight each part of a whole.

Since her first approach to audiovisual arts, her interest has been placed on a deconstructive attitude towards reality. Deconstruction takes the established concepts and displays how behind each of these concepts one finds its contradictions, its hidden zones, its defeat, its others, its shadows.

Erin Adams

Erin Adams, founder of Smell Art, merges science and art to deliver distinctive sensory experiences rooted in the sense of smell. She collaborates with a wide range of artists to enhance live music, theatre performances and film screenings through scent design. She recognises that scent can influence emotions, affect other senses and create a sense of unity amongst strangers. Erin loves to explore the various ways scents can enhance our emotional and neurological responses to our surroundings.

Prepare to be captivated, inspired, and empowered by the symphony of scents and flavors that shape our world. Register now, your sensory adventure awaits!
